The Doshas in Ayurveda – Pitta

As we discussed in the previous article Doshas in a person are responsible for their physiological, mental and physical functioning. 

We discussed about Vata Dosha (https://www.mokshayurveda.com/blog/the-doshas-in-ayurveda-vata ).Now let’s discuss about Pitta Dosha.

I. PITTA

Pitta consists mostly of the fire and water elements .It’s commonly described as hot, light, sharp, oily, liquid, and mobile. Pitta is one of the three doshas known to govern the metabolism that takes place in the body. 

CHARACTERISTICS OF A PITTA PERSON

Physical Appearance- Pitta types are distinguished by being quick on the uptake and by their powerful intellect and ambition. These are born leaders, brimming with energy and strength and with a tendency to be perfectionists. They have an athletic build. Their hands and feet are never cold, even in winter. Medium height, with highly developed muscle system,
skin is soft, greasy, warm; tendency to develop freckles and blemishes,
premature greying of hair. , good circulation, healthy skin and hair.

Mental Characteristics - They’re highly motivated, goal-oriented, and competitive.  Intelligent, purposeful, learn quickly, self-determined, master skills easily, have strong desire for success, natural leaders They are impatient, prone to conflict, always hungry, have mood swings when hungry, prone to acne and inflammation and sensitive to heat.

Appetite and Digestion – Pitta types love sweet things just as much as bitter flavors. And they love cold drinks. Sweet mild spices, such as
mint, and cinnamon are considered particularly beneficial for the Pitta type. They like to eat a lot and digest quickly, are very often thirsty and love sweet and bitter flavors.


What Pitta prakruti people need to regulate their bodily functions- Emotional strain or anger, high temperatures, excessive alcohol, meat and can throw Pitta out of balance.  People with Pitta disorders struggle with upset stomachs, heartburn and diarrhea. Their metabolism becomes hyper acidic, they burp frequently, perspire and are emotionally sensitive – all strong indications that the internal bodily bio-elements have become imbalancedMental challenges, sport, type-appropriate nutrition, regular meditation, sufficient relaxation and at least seven hours of sleep are needed for a Pitta Prakruti Person. Those with a pitta-dominant dosha should focus on work-life balance and avoid extreme heat (e.g., weather, spicy food).
